Case Study Communal Narcissism - Manipur: Characteristics and Implications
Throughout my 27-years professional career, I have had the privilege of being an entrepreneur over a decade, experiencing having part of four successful business exits. Along the way, I have had the opportunity to extensively travel to over 40 countries and live and work in diverse locations such as the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and India. This journey has provided me with invaluable experiences, ranging from collaborating with highly qualified professionals across continents to facing the highs and lows of financial outcomes.

My interactions with various people from different backgrounds and professions have exposed me to many examples of narcissistic behaviors. This sparked my curiosity to explore the concept of “Narcissism” and its related traits. As a result, I devoted more time to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, especially in relation to our society and the current challenges we face.

In this article, I would like to share some of these characteristics, which I believe resonate within our society today, and particularly in a place that holds deep significance, especially in my life.

To simplify, the term narcissism can also be addressed with “I”, “me”, “mine” and “my world”. I would be interested in seeing how narcissism impacts different communities.

The concept of narcissism has garnered significant attention in psychological research and popular culture. While narcissism is often associated with individuals who have an inflated sense of self-importance and a constant need for admiration, there is another dimension of narcissism known as communal narcissism. Communal narcissism refers to an individual's excessive focus on the perceived specialness and superiority of their group or community. In this knowledge sharing, I would like to explore the characteristics of communal narcissism and its potential implications on individuals and society.

Belief in the Inherent Superiority of the Group:
One of the defining features of communal narcissism is the firm belief in the inherent superiority of one's own group. Individuals with communal narcissism tend to see their group as exceptional and deserving of special recognition and privileges. They exhibit an unwavering loyalty to their group, often dismissing or downplaying the achievements and contributions of other communities.

Grandiose Altruism:
Communal narcissists display a form of "grandiose altruism" where their acts of generosity and kindness are primarily motivated by the desire to maintain and enhance their group's image rather than genuine concern for others. They engage in charitable acts or community service to gain admiration and validation from others, rather than to genuinely help those in need.

Attention-Seeking Behavior:
Individuals with communal narcissism often seek attention and validation for their group's achievements. They actively seek opportunities to showcase their group's superiority and make sure their community receives recognition for their accomplishments. They are likely to engage in self-promotion and boastfulness to gain the admiration and respect of others.

Defensive Reactions to Criticism:
Communal narcissists have a strong need to protect the image and reputation of their group. When faced with criticism or challenges to their group's superiority, they react defensively. They may dismiss or invalidate any negative feedback or engage in ad hominem attacks against those who question or challenge their group's beliefs or actions.

Communal narcissism often leads to a heightened sense of intergroup bias. Individuals with communal narcissism tend to view members of their own group positively while holding negative stereotypes and prejudices against members of other groups. This bias can lead to increased hostility, conflict, and social division.

Address stereotypes and prejudices that fuel communal narcissism. Encourage critical thinking and expose individuals to diverse perspectives and experiences. By challenging and debunking stereotypes, you can help create a more inclusive and tolerant environment.

Promote positive leadership that focuses on inclusivity, empathy, and humility. Leaders who embody these qualities can set an example and influence others to adopt more inclusive attitudes and behaviors. Encourage leaders to prioritize the greater good over personal or communal gain.

Manipur, an area of 22,327 km² with a population of about 3,000,000.00 is in the northeastern part of the Republic of India. It boasts a remarkable coexistence of 34 diverse communities, among which the Meitei Tribes constitute the majority population and serve as the emblematic representatives of Manipur both within and beyond its borders. This enchanting state is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes, and distinctive geographical location, earning it the epithet of the "Land of Jewel." Its breathtaking natural beauty, adorned with lakes, rivers, and lush valleys, further enhances its allure.

Throughout its history, Manipur has encountered challenges, including ethnic tensions and insurgency issues. However, the tireless pursuit of peace, unity, and development remains at the core, nurturing a sense of harmony among the diverse communities. In the face of these hurdles, Manipur stands as an exceptional testament to communities embracing their unique identities while contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the state. This fusion of cultures, coupled with the captivating natural splendor, renders Manipur an irresistible destination for exploration and enlightenment.
Within Manipur, the Meitei tribe stands as a testament to profound love for their motherland. However, a significant challenge looms over them—the absence of effective leadership and a unifying figure. This impedes their ability to mobilize towards shared goals, resulting in a lack of coordination and a shared vision. Moreover, presenting their ideas on neutral platforms becomes arduous, hindering clear communication and impeding mutual understanding.

Overcoming these obstacles necessitates the cultivation of strong leadership, the promotion of coordination, and the enhancement of communication clarity within the Meitei community in Manipur. In today's progressive and inclusive world, it is widely recognized that the vulnerability arising from the Meitei tribe's weakness and their struggle to unite poses a reality challenge to both present and future generations. The Meitei Tribe firmly upholds the principles of equality and inclusive coexistence with the 34 ancestral tribes, refusing to compromise the integrity of Manipur.

Conclusion:
Communal narcissism represents a distinct form of narcissistic behavior, where individuals excessively focus on their group's superiority and seek validation and admiration for their community. This phenomenon has significant implications for individuals and society, including increased polarization, diminished empathy, and resistance to social progress. Recognizing and understanding communal narcissism is crucial for fostering empathy, promoting inclusivity, and working towards a more harmonious and cooperative society.

A neutral party with upper hand authority is the most impactful solution to such a situation and therefore it’s high time for the higher authority to intervene this 44+ long days violence silence and ensure the immediate peace by exposing the consequences to those who has attempted, manipulated, and manufactured the whole violence resulting the loss of 120 innocent lives, injured 500, and displaced over 70,000 citizens. Arsonists have destroyed thousands of homes and villages as reported with visuals in the media already.

Working in a disconnected fashion creates disorder rather than fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. It is crucial for community leaders to adopt a resolute position, take charge, and advance to safeguard their constituents and establish a reliable and interconnected environment within their connected community ecosystem.

By addressing communal narcissism and establishing impartial leadership, we can pave the way for immediate peace, justice, and healing, while ensuring a brighter future for the affected communities and the nation.
